It is disheartening to see the wealthy buying stocks worth billions while the common mwananchi can hardly afford a single meal in a day in the face of this pandemic. How can it then be assumed that this pandemic is an equalizer while some benefit immensely while others are starved.
We could say that COVID-19 has equalized all persons in terms of its infection but not at all in terms of economic capability. There are those still living their usual life styles of eating chicken daily while the common mwananchi does not know where the next meal will come from.
I cannot deny the fact that all persons have been affected in one way or another by this pandemic. Those living in mansions and bungalows as well as those in slums. However I feel its a wake up call to the government.
It is said that Kenya has had an impressive economic growth since 2005 yet there is extreme inequality in terms of wealth distribution. It is expected that the fruits of this growth trickles down to the poor yet they cannot feel or see it. According to statistics the number of super-rich in Kenya is one of the fastest growing in the world. This only means that the number of the poor is growing in just the same rate.
The disturbing thing is that the ‘people up there’ seem to be completely oblivious of Kenyans economic distribution. Oblivious of the fact that the percentage of employed people is less than 40% and the fact that more than 70% of Kenyans depend on a day’s earning to put food on the table. Kenyans who would die from hunger if they don’t open that kiosk, shop, kibanda or mkokoteni
The VAT reduction by 2% is a joke, I don’t see how it makes things easier for a common Kenyan. So is tax exemption for employees earning less than 24,000. These adjustments only serve the ‘people up there’ to feel better about themselves. They don’t serve Kenyans at all. What if there is a total lock down tomorrow? What happens to the mama mboga who relies on her daily earnings to feed her family?
Kenyans should learn from this pandemic and take action in the 2022 elections. Actions that will ensure that the likes of ‘people up there’ do not return to office. Because they do not deserve a single vote!
